LA PUENTE – Early in the week, Mater Dei coach Bruce Rollinson warned the team’s boosters that looking ahead to next week’s highly anticipated showdown with national power Bishop Gorman could be a dangerous thing since the Monarchs had to face a dangerous team – Bishop Amat – before then.

The Monarchs responded to that message, putting together a dominant defensive performance en route to a 31-7 win over the Lancers on Friday night.

Playing without Amon-Ra St. Brown and C.J. Parks, two of the best receivers in Southern California, the Mater Dei offense focused on chewing up time of possession and yards on the ground.

“I thought we played great defense tonight,” said Rollinson. “We needed to get physical, it’s going to help with our preparation. We had a lot of young kids that played well, so I’m pleased with that.”

The undersized Lancers defense did well to hold Mater Dei to 179 yards rushing on 38 attempts, but bad field position and two long second half drives broke the game open.

Mater Dei led at the half, 17-0, and then opened the third quarter with a 12-play 65-yard drive that lasted just under seven minutes and culminated with a 4-yard touchdown run by Christopher Street.

On the ensuing possession, Amat drove into Monarchs’ territory for the first time but the drive stalled when Blake Archuleta’s pass was intercepted by senior Stephon Robbins near the goal line.

Once again, Mater Dei went back to the ground, rushing 11 times over a 14-play drive that lasted 7:30. Junior quarterback JT Daniels put the game out of reach with his feet, making a nice move in the open field on a 24-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 31-0 with 8:30 left in the game.

Daniels completed 11 of 17 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown.

“We felt in our evaluation of the offense that we needed to run the ball a little more,” said Rollinson. “We’ll mix it up and do whatever we need to do to win and tonight that was keep it close and pound the rock.”

Mater Dei’s defense was dominant, sacking Archuleta seven times to go along with two interceptions and a fumble recovery while allowing only 107 yards of total offense to the Lancers.

“Everytime I come up to Kiefer Stadium I have some great memories,” said Rollnson. “That team (Bishop Amat) is going to be a good football team. They are playing with some young players, but they will become a force.”

‘Chronic obstruction’ of justice by the district attorney and sheriff is intolerable

A confessed killer’s rampage left eight innocent people dead and one wounded in the worst case of mass murder in Orange County history. But because law enforcement violated proper due process, the punishment will not fit the crime.

This utterly sickening miscarriage of justice in the case of People v. Dekraai was neither a failure by the court nor the by judge, but of Orange County’s top law enforcement agencies — the District Attorney’s Office and the Sheriff’s Department. Misconduct by the prosecution and jail handlers forced the bitter decision to strike the death penalty made by Superior Court Judge Thomas Goethals.

The foundation of our criminal justice system is the right to a fair trial. It is incumbent on law enforcement officials to properly investigate the crime, submit evidence for prosecution and share discovery with the defense. That simply did not happen in this case despite Judge Goethals’ repeated insistence by court order over a period of more than four years. A prosecutor’s duty is to seek justice, not convictions.

The district attorney and Sheriff’s Department did not appeal any of the discovery orders but rather ignored, denied or delayed the production of evidence. Judge Goethals described it as “chronic obstructionism.” Simple evidentiary sanctions (excluding some evidence) could not be imposed as it was impossible to know what evidence was tainted by the discovery violations and what was not. This left the court with the unfortunate choice to impose a draconian sanction by striking the death penalty, an unthinkable remedy.

“During this entire period, prosecutors failed their professional responsibility to properly investigate,” Judge Goethals wrote in his ruling. “The court finds the prosecution team is unable and/or unwilling to comply fully with these lawful orders that remain in full force and effect. As a result, the court now exercises its discretion to strike the death penalty as a potential punishment for this defendant, despite the horrendous nature of his crimes.”

The improper use of jailhouse informants and withholding evidence violated the defendant’s constitutional rights, denied true justice for the victims, and shattered the public trust. If our top law enforcement officials can’t abide by the rule of law, and allow or even encourage such misconduct to filter through their ranks, this leadership is no longer capable of running our most powerful public agencies.

Dekraai is only the most notorious case of OCDA and OCSD misconduct. In recent years, at least six murder convictions in Orange County have been overturned or sentences reduced due to similar prosecutorial misconduct. In one case, a teenage boy was held for more than two years in jail before exculpatory evidence was revealed and he was exonerated from the murder charge. Our public safety is compromised as dangerous criminals are released to the streets and our individual liberties are threatened by the unethical and unconstitutional practices of the District Attorney’s Office. We should all be very afraid.

It is shameful that both the OCDA and OCSD issued statements that continue to blame the judge, defense attorneys and the media for the unsatisfactory outcome in the penalty phase of the Dekraai trial. There has been no acceptance of responsibility and no apologies; neither to the victims’ families, nor to the public. It is time for all citizens of Orange County, and our elected leaders, to finally acknowledge and repudiate the threat to our community through the depth of systemic corruption in these agencies, even if the agencies refuse to acknowledge it themselves.

Mario Mainero is a professor of law at Chapman University’s Fowler Law School. Todd Spitzer is an Orange County supervisor, representing the Third District, and a candidate for district attorney.

U.S.-Russian cooperation working on ground in Syria

As the multi-sided war in Syria grinds on, cynicism about the future is more than justified. Arguably, America has failed time and again to secure its objectives and follow through on its intentions in its halting, lurching, incomplete intervention.

The United States allowed Russia to establish itself as a major military and diplomatic player in the Mideast; allowed Iran unprecedented reach and control across the fertile crescent, clear to the Mediterranean coast via Lebanon, and allowed the Islamic State to metastasize to such a degree that the whole balance of power in the region will have to be reworked, without a playbook, once ISIS is destroyed.

This is not a track record to be proud of. But in spite of it all, there is evidence that the U.S. and Russia can successfully broker an eventual peace.

As important as grand strategy and great power politics can be, high-level maneuvers driven by rhetoric, theory and national interest can often fail to create the real-life conditions for practical cooperation, however tightly circumscribed, among rivals or adversaries. This has been the case with Washington and Moscow.

Three successive White Houses have sought a fresh start with Russia, and three have been stymied, their hopes of a geopolitical reset or grand bargain swiftly fading into a haze of recrimination — and, occasionally, outright hostility. Russia’s unilateral military advances in Ukraine are often held out as an example of who is to blame for the disappointing condition of relations between the two countries, but perhaps an even more fundamental culprit has been the complete lack of any structure wherein Americans and Russians are obliged to address urgent but solvable problems together on a routine basis. In Syria, however, just that kind of system has arisen out of necessity.

For months, the U.S. and Russian militaries have been working closely and constantly to avoid direct conflict in the crowded and chaotic Syrian landscape, “helping draw a line on the map that separates U.S.- and Russian-backed forces waging parallel campaigns on Syria’s shrinking battlefields,” according to Reuters. The wire service was recently granted access to the Air Force’s Combined Air Operations Area in Qatar, where difficult but “resilient” communications — as many as 12 calls a day — are conducted around the clock with Russian counterparts.

“The reality is we’ve worked through some very hard problems and, in general, we have found a way to maintain the deconfliction line and found a way to continue our mission,” top Mideast Air Force commander Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Harrigian told Reuters. “We have to negotiate, and sometimes the phone calls are tense.” But they’re working: not just in a tactical sense, but in a strategic one too. As ISIS continues to lose ground and Syria’s warring parties converge to fill the void, strictly maintained habits of U.S.-Russia cooperation — not high ideals or grand theories — will make the difference between a chain reaction of carnage and an orderly establishment of new zones of control.

Given the immensity of the challenge involved in working out the details of the new dispensation, only the U.S. and Russia can be counted on to work effectively in concert. The Assad regime is prepared to coordinate with both Moscow and Teheran, but Iran’s ambitions are opposed by too many regional powers, including Israel, for that axis of interest to settle matters alone.

Israel itself, a stalwart U.S. ally, was incensed that recent Russo-American talks failed to ensure that Iran and Hezbollah would not creep too close to its border — an eventuality that would lead to unilateral Israeli military action, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently warned Vladimir Putin in a three-hour meeting.

“An Iranian military presence in Syria will be a constant source of friction and tension not only with Israel, but with the Sunni majority in Syria, with the Sunni countries in the region, and with Sunni minorities outside the region,” as the director-general of Israel’s intelligence ministry told Bloomberg Politics. The U.S. and Israel may be unable to banish Iran from Syria, thanks to Russia’s protection. But Russia’s involvement is more delicate than it appears: if the balance of powers tips out of control, Russia’s risky intervention will become a debacle, and its core interests in the region hurt. The likely outcome will be a continued Iranian and Iranian proxy presence in postwar Syria, but not beyond Israeli red-line areas.

Of course, that issue is only one of a handful of thorny problems. Turkish and Kurdish military aims in Syria also must be taken into account. But as with Iran’s scope of influence, only the U.S. and Russia are powerful enough and positioned properly enough to establish and enforce workable, stable boundaries.

And Moscow and Washington will only be able to convert that potential into reality in virtue of how well specific individuals on both sides have been able to build working relationships of mutual reliance — however laced with suspicion or adversity. Officials on the ground and in the region will continue to be called upon to make high-stakes but detail-laden judgment calls to strengthen the current regime of limited but indispensable trust.

To date, there’s legitimate reason to put hope in that process. It’s a far cry from what Americans had a right to expect, but it’s far better than what we had a reason to fear.

NEWPORT BEACH – A veteran quarterback and running back helped JSerra’s football team open a renovated stadium Friday with a victory for its new coach.

Three-year starter Matt Robinson passed for 340 yards and senior Al Fisher rushed for 101 yards as the No. 9 Lions defeated No. 13 Corona del Mar, 45-27, in the debut of Coach Pat Harlow at new-look Newport Harbor.

Robinson, a Montana commit, tossed two touchdowns while Fisher, a transfer from Paramount who played at JSerra as a freshman, rushed for two other scores.

“They’re unbelievable players,” Harlow said of the duo. “They won the game for us. We didn’t do very well up front and penalties were killing us. Excited to have the win but really disappointed how we played.”

JSerra (1-0) needed every bit of the offensive production because Corona del Mar quarterback Nathaniel Espinoza passed for 325 yards and two touchdowns to rising sophomore John Humphreys in his first start.

The pairing between the Division 1 Lions and Division 4 Sea Kings (0-1) produced more than 800 yards offense.

“CdM is a great program,” Harlow said. “They have a lot of pride and it showed.”

JSerra opened a 35-13 in the third quarter on the second touchdown runs by Chris Castillo and Fisher.

Fisher scored on an 11-yard TD run with 4:38 left in the quarter thanks to a path-clearing block from tight end TJ Medina but the Sea Kings avoid the knockout.

Corona del Mar answered with a 22-yard touchdown pass by Espinoza to Humphreys with 50 seconds left in the third.

It was a huge night for receivers. Humphreys (five catches for 113) and teammate Tae Le (four for 106) each surpassed 100 yards while JSerra’s Tyler Shimomura hauled in six catches for 118 yards. The Lions’ Tarik Luckett added seven receptions for 97 yards.

Robinson helped highlight the fourth by rolling to his left and throwing across his body for a 14-yard TD to Luckett. The extra-point by Jake Haggard made it 41-20 early in the period.

JSerra led, 21-13, after a mostly back and forth first half.

Fisher escaped several tacklers in the backfield to break a slick, 29-yard touchdown run with 2:01 left in the first quarter to give JSerra an early lead.

Corona del Mar tied the score, 7-7, on its next possession with an 18-yard touchdown strike by Espinoza to Humphreys with 29 seconds left in the opening quarter.

JSerra’s defense set up the Lions’ next score. Abdul-Malik McClain and Joey Philippi forced an intentional grounding that led to a punt from the Corona del Mar 1. JSerra capitalized on the short field and scored on fourth-and-goal on a 3-yard dive over the pile by Castillo.

Corona del Mar responded again. The Sea Kings drove 72 yards for a 5-yard TD run by Espinoza with 5:18 left in the half. The extra-point failed, leaving JSerra ahead, 14-13.

The Lions took lead for good on the ensuing possession as Robinson launched a deep pass that hit Munir McClain in stride for a 66-yard TD with 3:57 in the half.

Two more Corona football standouts transfer to Villa Park

Two more football players from Corona have enrolled at Villa Park, Spartans coach Dusan Ancich confirmed Friday.

Linebacker/running back Zechariah Holifield (6-0, 220) and athlete Marcus Johnson are now at Villa Park, which earlier added touted 6-foot-6 sophomore quarterback Shane Illingworth (6-6, 225).

Illingworth and Holifield were contributors last season at powerhouse Centennial of Corona.

Holifield, who has been offered by Colorado State, and Johnson are both seniors and moving into the Villa Park area, Ancich said. They could be eligible soon, Ancich said. The coach called both “exceptional” athletes.

Illingworth will observe the Southern Section’s sitout period.
