Mayor declares Huntington Beach a City of Kindness

Mayor Barbara Delgleize on Thursday, Aug. 31, officially declared Huntington Beach a City of Kindness by signing a Mayor’s Pledge for the national program.

At a gathering of 1,000 staff from Ocean View School District on their welcome back to school day, the mayor committed the city to become a “catalyst of kindness and encouraging residents, community organizations, schools, and local businesses to create a kinder, more gracious world,” according to a press release.

The City of Kindness pledge is inspired by the 100 Billion Acts of Kindness Resolution passed at the 84th annual U.S. Conference of Mayors in 2016. Huntington Beach joins about 300 U.S. cities that have adopted the resolution.

“City of Kindness aims to change the culture of every U.S. city through simple, powerful and unsolicited acts of kindness, and we’re signing on to do our part,” Delgleize said in a press release.

As part of the program, there is an online Kindness Counter that tracks progress on cityofkindness.org. After performing an act of kindness, residents and others in the city can go to to the website to record their act.

“You can shape what kindness looks like to you – from reading a book to a child to picking up a piece of trash on your walk to school, to delivering a meal to a homebound senior or giving up your seat to another rider on the bus,” Delgleize said. “Just complete an act of kindness a day and submit it on the city’s Kindness Counter.”

Body found in area where Murrieta woman went missing

A body of a woman has been found in the area near where a Murrieta woman was reported to have gone missing last week, authorities said Monday, Sept. 4.

The body was found Friday evening near the Tenaja Falls trailhead, Riverside County sheriff’s Deputy Armando Munoz said. He said the body has not yet been positively identified; an autopsy is pending.

Last Monday, Murrieta resident Jennifer Kinsella-Grindle, 41, a mother of three teenage children, went missing after leaving for a hike on the Tenaja Trail. She never returned home, according to authorities and friends.

Deputies brought a bloodhound to the area, but the dog lost Kinsella-Grindle’s scent halfway down the trail. She was last seen wearing brown shorts, an Army green tank top, and flip-flop sandals, according to authorities and friends.

Kinsella-Grindle’s purse and cell phone were found along the trail, near where she had parked her vehicle, authorities said.

Kellen Clemens re-signed by Chargers as backup quarterback

The Chargers re-signed quarterback Kellen Clemens on Monday, keeping the 34-year-old to back up Philip Rivers for the fourth straight season.

The team had released Clemens at the 90-to-53 cutdown deadline this past Saturday, but only did so to preserve roster flexibility through the weekend. Clemens has only thrown 10 regular-season passes with the Chargers, but has a strong relationship with Rivers and is commuting with the six-time Pro Bowler from their homes in San Diego County to the team’s practice facility in Costa Mesa.

Briefly parting with Clemens allowed the Chargers to keep Denzel Perryman on their initial 53-man roster through the weekend — a necessary prerequisite should they wish to reactivate the injured linebacker later in the season. Perryman underwent ankle surgery in August, and could be sidelined for at least two months.

The Chargers placed the starting middle linebacker on injured reserve Monday morning, but are hoping to see him on the field again later this fall. Korey Toomer, a former fifth-round pick, is currently filling in at the top of the depth chart.

DACA stands for opportunity and service

Right now, hundreds of thousands of residents are on the edge of losing their jobs. They are our neighbors and our friends. They pay taxes and invest their time and energy into making their communities better places to live.

These neighbors are not in danger of being fired because of poor job performance. They are not worried about being laid off because their employers are downsizing. They are on the edge of being fired by Donald Trump as he considers destroying the DACA program.

DACA is an acronym for Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals and it allows the children of undocumented immigrants to attend school and work in the United States while Congress gets its act together to reform our dysfunctional immigration system. But DACA stands for much more than that for these hardworking immigrants, many of whom grew up and went to school here. The United States is the only country they have ever really known.

It is very likely that you have encountered someone in the DACA program and did not realize it. They probably spoke perfect English and shared similar interests with you, perhaps in music, sports, or other activities.  For several, they did not even know they were undocumented until they applied for a job or enrolled in college.

As a graduate student at Brown University, one of my classmates was a DACA student. Mateus was brought to the United States from South America at a very young age and grew up in New Jersey.  That was his home and being the good Jersey boy that he was, he went to Rutgers University. It was only in 2013 that NJ allowed in-state tuition for undocumented students, by that time Mateus had already transferred to Brown University

Fortunately, Mateus had a mentor looking out for him.  He transferred to Brown University and later applied to and was accepted by DACA. That is where we met, in the Urban Education Policy program. He was a brilliant student and a dedicated friend to others in the program. Mateus often spoke of going home to Newark, where he grew up, because that was where he wanted to make a difference.

Mateus graduated, served as a Congressional Hispanic Scholarship Graduate Fellow, and spoke on panels with then-Education Secretary John King. Mateus then returned home to serve on Newark’s LGBTQ Commission and works for an education foundation where he approves grants to invest money so other Newark kids like him can have more opportunities to succeed. His enthusiasm for America and his hometown helped strengthen my own appreciation for our freedom and my Southern California roots.

That is just one example of the more than 800,000 immigrants covered by DACA who are working hard, paying taxes, and making their communities better because they had the opportunity to get an education and work. Yet Trump is considering abolishing DACA so those 800,000 individuals would be out of work and at-risk for deportation. Not only would that be devastating for these residents and the communities they serve, it would tear families apart and be an economic debacle for employers, reducing national economic growth by $460 billion over the next ten years.

For DREAMers, DACA stands for opportunity. The opportunity to be a productive member of one’s community.  The opportunity to serve others and improve lives. That is exactly what Mateus is doing.  We must all stand up to ensure those opportunities to produce and serve. Tell Congress and Trump to protect DACA and pass real immigration reform.

Gil Cisneros is a candidate for Congressional District 39, which includes Fullerton, La Habra, La Habra Heights, Brea, Buena Park, Anaheim Hills, Placentia, Yorba Linda, Diamond Bar, Chino Hills, Hacienda Heights and Rowland Heights.

Kering to Open Historic Paris Headquarters to Visitors

MODERN HOSPITALITY: Kering is opening its historic Paris headquarters to the public over a weekend this month, inviting visitors to explore the history of the 17th-century hospice through a virtual reality tour.
Developed by a French start-up Timescope and historians, the tour will focus on the site’s role as a hospital just over a century ago.
The hospital chapel will serve as the site of an exhibit of contemporary artwork from the Pinault Collection with pieces from Seung-Taek Lee, Chen Zhen and David Hammons.
Over the weekend of Sept. 16 and 17, visitors will also be able to inspect haute couture pieces designed by Cristóbal Balenciaga, dotted throughout the cluster of Left Bank buildings.
The temporary exhibits represent “heritage and creation,” said Kering chairman and chief executive officer François-Henri Pinault, who was looking for a fresh way to show the site to the public for this year’s heritage days event.
The company celebrated its move into the headquarters a year ago, inviting designers, movie stars and local politicians to view art work from the Pinault Collection.
