Chanel Showcases “Sabai” Style in Bangkok With Pharrell Williams, Tilda Swinton

BANGKOK–“Sabai, sabai” was the phrase of the day as Chanel brought its most recent cruise collection and restaged it in Thailand, a celebrity-laden affair among a week of special activities for its VIP clients there who’ve powered the market to one of the house’s top ten globally.
The feeling of “sabai”, a phrase which translates to a carefree attitude somewhere between “no worries” and “feeling fine”, began as traditional boats ferried Pharrell Williams, Lily-Rose Depp, Tilda Swinton and other guests for the short jaunt over the Chao Phraya River to a warehouse transformed into a pier for the runway.
“It’s the first time Chanel is showing in my homeland. It’s so special,” said Thai model and actress Aokbab, who had shot a special short video in the lead up to this event. Swinton was good-naturedly getting swarmed for photos but between posing for shots with fans, explained how she had been shown around the city by director Apichatpong Weerasethakul, who was also attending.

The Cruise show was re-staged twice in Bangkok for the Thai market, now one of Chanel’s top 10 worldwide.

Pharrell Williams Designs Capsule Collection for Chanel

RHYME AND REASON: Pharrell Williams arrived at Chanel’s first show in Bangkok on Wednesday night wearing a yellow hoodie festooned with sparkly CC and Coco logos — a wink to a new Chanel and Pharrell ready-to-wear and accessories capsule he did for spring 2019.
Chanel said the collection would debut exclusively on March 29, at its new Seoul flagship boutique, followed by select Chanel boutiques around the world from April 4.
Williams has appeared in campaigns for Chanel, composed a song for an original film by Karl Lagerfeld in tandem with its Paris-Salzburg show, and collaborated on Adidas sneakers for a Chanel installation at Colette in Paris last year.
Chanel confirmed the project in a press release, but gave no details about the size of the range or prices. The French house reprised its cruise show in Thailand’s capital with a new decor installed on the banks of the Chao Phraya river.

Maison Atia Opens Pop-Up in Chicago

Faux fur brand Maison Atia held its first Chicago pop-up shop and pet adoption event over five days — from Wednesday to Sunday — at PAWS Chicago, a Chicago-based animal shelter.
“It’s really about showing our brand to Chicago for the first time with the PAWS community,” said Chloe Mendel, the creative force behind Maison Atia. In partnership with the animal shelter, her brand’s tagline, “Buy a coat, save a puppy,” means that every coat sold, whether at a pop-up event or online, helps provide a homeless dog or cat transportation to a no-kill shelter.
Mendel is a sixth-generation furrier and daughter of Gilles Mendel, whose previous fashion stints included designing ready-to-wear and couture for her family business J. Mendel. She launched Maison Atia in November 2017. “The faux fur world was untapped and looked at, kind of, like rock ‘n’ roll. I want to change that conversation and really discern the quality of the faux fur. I look for color and quality,” said Mendel, who splits her time between New York City and Chicago, where she lives with boyfriend and Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, their son Augustus Juppiter, daughter Philomena Clementine, two dogs and two cats.
