EXCLUSIVE: Rimowa Introduces Millennial-Friendly Colored Cases

PARIS — Having collaborated with brands including Fendi, Supreme and Off-White on high-profile limited-edition models, German luggage-maker Rimowa has focused its efforts in-house for its first collection of colored suitcases since the introduction of its new visual identity last year.
One year in the making, the polycarbonate cases in four Millennial-friendly hues are scheduled to launch on Wednesday at Japanese department store Isetan in Tokyo, before a worldwide rollout on June 6 in Rimowa flagships, department store corners and online.
It’s the latest step in the reinvention of the 120-year-old company under chief executive officer Alexandre Arnault, who engineered its acquisition in 2017 by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. Having drastically cut back its wholesale network and revamped brand communications, Arnault turned to the product itself.
“The first couple of years of what we did really was focusing on collaborations. That was a way for us to bring excitement to buying a suitcase,” he told WWD in an interview at the brand’s new offices at the LVMH headquarters in Paris, where visitors are greeted by a Supreme-branded pinball machine.

EXCLUSIVE: Karl Lagerfeld Memorial Event to Be Held in Paris

PARIS — The fashion industry is still feeling the loss of fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who died Feb. 19.
In celebration of his legacy, the houses of Chanel, Fendi and Karl Lagerfeld have organized a memorial in honor of the fashion maverick, who served as creative director of all three labels.
The tribute, named “Karl For Ever,” will be held at the Grand Palais in Paris on June 20, for one night only during Paris Men’s Fashion Week.
Staged by theater and opera director Robert Carsen, the performance will be a mix of videos of Lagerfeld himself, broadcast on three gigantic screens hung around the main hall of the Grand Palais, as well as interviews with his collaborators in the worlds of fashion, art and culture.
In addition to the video footage, live performances by dancers, musicians, singers and actors will be held all around the space, interpreting pieces of work admired by Lagerfeld.
“I wanted something full of life and unexpected,” Carsen told WWD, adding that the event will above all be a “joyful celebration of all things Karl,” in keeping with Lagerfeld’s lighter side.
“He once famously said, ‘A funeral? I’d rather die,’” laughed Carsen. “He would have wanted it to be a joyful moment.”

Giorgio Armani Takes Cruise to Tokyo

TOKYO — In his first runway show for a cruise collection, Giorgio Armani touched down in the Asian island nation of Japan, and brought with him a Mediterranean island vibe.
“The collection is a condensed version of my style, which has remained consistent over the years — like an island in the fashion system,” the designer said. “The burnt, neutral colors and tactile, raw textures reference characteristic island landscapes.”
Even the runway itself resembled water flowing over sand, with clear Plexiglass panels covering beige carpet and throwing ripple-like reflections onto the surrounding walls. The show began with looks in neutral shades, eventually moving on to more vibrant reds and blues. But each look was relaxed and easy, with lots of fluid shapes.
Armani also made ample use of soft, natural textures. Linen, silk and satin were accented with leather trim and sumptuous knits. Lightweight fabrics were often used in voluminous pieces, from oversized women’s blouses and flowing ponchos to pleated men’s trousers that gathered at the ankle like jogging pants.
