Roundup: Edison stays hot, tops Long Beach Wilson

EDISON 4, WILSON 2 >> The Moore League champion Bruins (17-11) only had two hits against Edison starter Riley Haddon in a Division 2 first-round loss at home.

The Chargers (19-12), who have won 11 of their last 15 games, jumped out to an early lead, and after Wilson tied the score in the second inning, Edison junior Spencer Serven hit a two-run home run in the third inning to cap the scoring.

“It’s baseball and it’s a funny game,” Wilson coach Andy Hall said. “You can’t factor in emotions and nerves like you think you can. We came out flat to start and (Edison) took advantage because they’re a good hitting team.”

The Chargers started the game with four consecutive hits off Wilson ace Zach Pettway and finished with nine for the game. Edison scored on an RBI single from sophomore Ted Burton and Serven’s sacrifice fly in the first inning.

Pettway hit a solo home run in the second inning before third baseman Alex Seguine singled and eventual scored on a ground out to tie the game, 2-2. Wilson never got another hit. In the following frame, Edison catcher Connor Aoki hit a one-out single before Serven’s two-out go-ahead home run to left field. Pettway only allowed two hits in the next three innings while striking out five. Relief pitcher Cole Fleming pitched a scoreless seventh.

Haddon needed less than 80 pitches to go the distance while striking out seven without issuing a walk. The junior retired 17 consecutive batters to finish the game, including striking out the side in the seventh inning.

ST. ANTHONY 11, ST. MARGARET’S 7 >> The Saints (21-2) scored early and held off St. Margaret’s (13-11) in the first round of Division 6 at Clark Field.

St. Anthony will host Big Bear in the second round on Tuesday.

“We were pretty good offensively,” St. Anthony coach Kris Jondle said. “(St. Margaret’s) was motivated and it was important for us to jump on them early.”

The Saints had 10 hits, including four when they batted around in the first inning. Senior Dominik Goldschmidt had a huge day at the plate, going 2 for 3 with two home runs and four RBIs.

“My coaches were telling me to focus on hitting line drives and I got some good pitches to hit,” Goldschmidt said. “I got under a couple balls and with the short porch they were able to get over.”

St. Anthony took a 5-0 lead after eight players reached base in the first inning, including junior Dominick Tucker, who got on twice. Tucker went 2 for 3 with two walks, three runs and two RBI.

“I got into some good counts and just took a hack to see where it went,” Tucker said. “I wanted to get on base for my teammates so they can execute.”

After Goldschmidt hit his second home run of the day to give the Saints a four-run cushion in the sixth, St. Margaret’s brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh with two outs. Freshman JB Quamma got two big strikeouts in the final inning. He pitched four innings after starting pitcher Wyatt Duran was taken out after three.

“He’s nails,” Jondle said about Quamma. “He throws strikes and he competes. He’s just a battler.”

Sophomore Andrew Donini scored runs in the first and second inning, respectively, for the Saints. He also had an RBI in the third. Davis and junior Matt Sussoeff each had an RBI and a run.
