Power pole fire knocks out electricity to some Costa Mesa residents

COSTA MESA — A transformer caught fire Friday night, knocking out power to several residents in Costa Mesa, authorities said.

Reports of a pole in the backyard of a residence sparking and exploding were made about 9:30 p.m. on May 19 in the 2100 block of Fairview Road and Wilson Street, according to Costa Mesa Fire Department Capt. Chris Coates.

The outage is affecting people within Fairview Road and Placentia Avenue and Joann and Wilson streets, according to Coates. A second outage was also reported in the area between Harbor Boulevard and Mesa Verde Drive East and Adams Avenue, he said.

Southern California Edison is on scene working to restore power.

No time estimate was given as to when the transformer would be fixed.
