Comedian Muses on Canada’s ‘Hoser’ Style

TORONTO — Happy Canada Day, eh!
Come July 1, every Canadian with a hoser in his or her heart — and there are millions of them — will take to their cottages, stretch out on those sun-warmed decks, beer in hand, and let those words trip off their lips in celebration of the Great White North’s 150th anniversary.
Indeed, for actress Ann Pornel, one of the new generation of actors performing in The Second City in Toronto, Canada’s milestone birthday offers the perfect opportunity to revisit the very essence of that “bad in plaid” persona made so famous in the Seventies and Eighties by SCTV’s hapless hosers, Bob and Doug McKenzie, portrayed by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas. (Details about Pornel’s milestone performance for the company will be released in July.)
“I was five years old when I immigrated to Canada from the Philippines, so plaid flannel shirts and bed linen did not fill my home or define me as a human being. I never wore denim on denim. And my go-to stores were never Hudson’s Bay or Roots — although the stuff they sell is top drawer. But when you look past all those ‘eh’s’ and brewskis [slang for beers], there’s definitely more to

Crowing About Canada

To commemorate the country’s 150th birthday, Canadian residents will be celebrating for four days, beginning with National Aboriginal Day on June 21. Brands are getting in on the party too, making their contributions in the form of limited-edition products — Hudson’s Bay’s paddle and Hermès’ “Into the Canadian Wild” scarf among them.

Andy Dunn, Sister Monica Royer Grow Children’s Biz Monica + Andy

NEW YORK — Direct-to-consumer children’s wear brand Monica + Andy is growing its offline footprint.
The three-year-old-company — named after Monica Royer, founder and chief executive officer, and kid brother Andy Dunn, founder of Bonobos and chairman of the board for Monica + Andy — this week opened its second guide shop. Located on the Upper West Side here at 410 Columbus Avenue, the 810-square-foot boutique is adjacent to Pure Barre and Scotch and Soda and is the former home of Alexis Bittar.
Royer has learned a thing or two from Dunn, who last week sold his eight-year-old men’s wear brand to Wal-Mart Stores Inc., for $310 million. She implemented Bonobos’ Guideshop retail concept into her business model almost from the inception of Monica + Andy, which launched an e-commerce site in spring 2014 at monicaandandy.com and opened a flagship guide shop in Chicago in July 2014. Most items in the collection — including newborn to toddler clothing and muslin blankets — range in price from about $20 to $70, with gift boxes that can go up to $250 to $1,000.
Instead of focusing on e-commerce first and trying bricks-and-mortar retail later — like many of the early direct-to-consumer companies, including Bonobos — Royer said

Exclusive: Fendi Sets Pop-ups at Dover Street Market Stores

MILAN — Fendi is launching three pop-up stores at Dover Street Market in London, Tokyo and New York.
The new spaces will be entirely dedicated to the playful Fendi Vocabulary, unveiled for fall and designed by Silvia Venturini Fendi. The essential words of this vocabulary — Yes, Love, Fantastic, Trust, Hope, Think — were inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s lexicon and will spill into the Dover Street Market London Haymarket store from June 22 to July 2; in the Tokyo Ginza unit from July 29 to Aug. 16, and at the New York venue from Sept. 7 to 21.
Venturini Fendi said that the vocabulary includes “very simple and common words that yet in their simplicity have a very important meaning that is going to be forever and that can help us in difficult moments. There are so many changes going on and things are moving faster and faster in the world, that is why I think that we have to evolve and look at the future with an optimistic attitude that can help us facing all these changes and challenges. Yet, we have to look forward without forgetting the fundamental values of the past. That is why I have chosen to use
