J. Mendel RTW Spring 2019

The famous gardens of Impressionist painter Claude Monet in Giverny were the inspiration for the fresh, charming color palette of Gilles Mendel’s elegant spring collection. The arty reference was combined with a late Seventies’ vibe, which resulted in a certain free-spirited yet always refined attitude injected in the lineup.
Fluid, flowy dresses were cut in a range of silhouettes, from long-sleeved styles embellished with precious textured embroideries, to plissé color-blocked V-neck frocks with pretty beaded decorations on the sleeves. to a range of covetable silk devoré styles with abstract motifs.
The designer put the focus on the bodice with flattering corset constructions, introducing a vein of polished sensuality with bustier frilled organza gowns and a draped column style revealing an exquisite floral decoration at the waist.
In keeping with the moody weather of the week, the spring lineup was rounded out with a range of outerwear options, including a more quotidian, sporty-chic bomber with a drawstring and exclusive astrakhan panels as well as luxurious mink short jackets and shawls to layer over the collection’s pretty dresses for an extra-luxurious touch.

Deveaux RTW Spring 2019

A summer in New York was the idea behind Tommy Ton’s first women’s collection for Deveaux, which was presented at the Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream shop on Rivington Street on the Lower East Side.
Minimal, easy-to-wear styles were at the core of the lineup, which was all about chic, essential silhouettes. Precise cuts, neutral tones and high-quality fabrications conveyed the polished look of the collection. Developed as a wardrobe of modern must-have items, it included fluid slipdresses layered over coordinated silk pants, relaxed, slightly oversize suits, striped shirtdresses and silk camisoles tucked in mannish roomy pleated cotton pants.
Targeting a wide audience ranging from the youngest tomboys to the chicest ladies, the collection offered highly versatile designs that can be easily integrated into every metropolitan spring wardrobe.

Opening Ceremony RTW Spring 2019

Radiant drag extravaganza is the most accurate way of describing the positive, uplifting performance Opening Ceremony staged for its spring collection at the West Village cabaret venue Le Poisson Rouge. The performance was called “The Gift of Showz” and was cocreated by Sasha Velour, winner of “Rupaul’s Drag Race“ season nine, and New York’s drag community.
Carol Lim and Humberto Leon haven’t offered a traditional runway for quite some time, opting instead to use performance art as a means to champion other creative fields and the people within. This particular performance held weighted significance for Leon. “Drag was the epitome of freedom and fantasy — everything a closeted teen could dream of,” he wrote in show notes. “What drew me to drag shows as a teenager is the same thing that propelled Carol and I to start Opening Ceremony: a celebration of individuality, freedom of expression, and the idea that realizing your dreams is only a fabulous outfit away.”
Experiential performances like these are often less about the clothing than the underlying social themes — in this case love, diversity, inclusivity and strength. That was immediately clear with Velour’s impassioned introduction: “What’s the point of having freedom of expression if you’re

Telfar RTW Spring 2019

It’s apparently not enough anymore for a designer to just do good clothes, he has to deliver an experience too, Telfar Clemens mastered both with his spring collection. Part of it was beyond his control. It was pouring, the show was outside on the Blade helipad on the FDR and 34th Street, and the weather contingency plan amounted to a tarp jerry-rigged to a chain fence, sheltering only the portion of the audience that could fit under it. When it buckled under the weight of the raindrops, someone came out with a broom and poked it until the water drained off. Eventually, the wind blew the tarp away completely. Everyone got wet. Everyone coped. It brought a bemused camaraderie to the atmosphere.
Weather aside, there was a lot going on. Clemens staged his show of unisex clothes around a barebones performance medley anchored by a single drummer and FAKA, the queer South African music and performance art duo comprised of Fela Gucci and Desire Marea. It was pretty impossible to take your eyes off them, with their hypnotic sound and stage presence that seemed to only amplify in the rain. But if you did, you saw a collection of casual everyday American

Rodarte RTW Spring 2019

A walled enclosure separates the imperfectly kept grounds of the Lower East Side’s Marble Cemetery from time and urban reality. On Sunday evening, a grim, gray sky and cold, unrelenting drizzle made for the first sign of autumn bleakness to come. The setting proved perfect for Rodarte, the former expats to Paris who returned to New York with an enchanting display of the mesmerizing oddity of their work.
It was all kinds of fabulous. Fabulously weird. Fabulously indulgent. Fabulously impractical. Fabulously brave. Fabulously beautiful.
The Mulleavys are storytellers with an affinity for the creepy, a pair of soft-spoken, jeans-wearing latter-day Brontës whose best work celebrates the curious dialogue between strange and exquisite. Only the runway is their printed page, a platform for creative expression and experimentation. “American fashion,” the designers told WWD recently, “is very focused on commerce, and we think that narrow focus can be oppressive.”
They resist that oppression passionately. Here, they created a compelling reverie populated by ethereal creatures who live somewhere between the realms of reality and enchantment. The clothes were marvels of feminine overstatement — tulle, lace, satin, point d’espirit, ruffled-up leather, bows, embroideries — flowers intwined in hair, faces veiled, a huge tutu halo crowning one enchantress.
Though the mood was eerie (a cemetery will

Mary J. Blige Helps Dennis Basso With Finale at His Runway Show, Talks ‘Body Cam’ and New Netflix Series

MARY J. GLADLY O-BLIGES: Nine-time Grammy winner Mary J. Blige is accustomed to performing in front of thousands, but walking the runway with Dennis Basso at his show Monday afternoon was a different kind of appearance.
“Of course, I was nervous. I’m not a runway model.” she said backstage after the show at Cipriani 42nd Street. “I was hoping that I would walk right and my train wouldn’t get caught on my shoes so I can do Dennis justice.”
The musician flew in from New Orleans where she is shooting the film “Body Cam,” to help the designer take his final bow. She also plays the lead in the designer’s latest ad campaign. Basso said, “I couldn’t feel better here with my good friend Mary. I feel exhilarated. It’s like a new everything for me. I’ve changed my collection. It’s not such a heavy hand. It’s lightweight, feathery and has just a little touch of beading here and there. It’s pure spring/summer.”
Wearing a slimming, white column gown, the musician said, “Style is however you want to express yourself. There’s no right way or wrong way to do it. It’s how you feel and what makes you feel good. When you are trying

Miu Miu Type Launches at Maxfield

Maxfield is set to debut the Miu Miu Type capsule collection, a customizable collection that features illustrations and letters. The idea was inspired by Miu Miu’s Autumn/Winter 2018 ready-to-wear show staged in Paris in March, in which the elegant halls of the Perret building were hung with generic poster-size sheets of white paper, each bearing a highly distinctive, large-scale, monochrome illustration of a female face or body interlaced with a letterform.
This Miu Miu “alphabet” – all 26 letters were created for the occasion by M/M Paris in collaboration with Miuccia Prada – is designed to engage the wider world, and of course the Miu Miu customer, in a conversation that stretches beyond the immediate fashion show arena.

The company reports that is has seen a significant increase in the desire for customizable and more personal items, and the collaboration with M/M Paris lent itself to be used in this way. It marks the first time Miu Miu is offering custom interactive services to clients.

And the Top Trending NYFW Topic on Social Media so Far Is…

Nicki Minaj has been a hot topic during New York Fashion Week.
According to social media analytics firm Talkwalker, the rapper has been the most talked about celebrity on social media, by a large margin — she clocks in at over 66,000 mentions, while Michael Kors follows behind at over 7,000. Ralph Lauren at over 6,000, and Tom Ford at nearly 5,000. While Minaj has been making the NYFW rounds, sitting front row at shows such as Opening Ceremony and Monse and attending parties for the Daily Front Row awards and IMG’s fashion week kick-off party, she really has Harper’s Bazaar Icons party to thank for the uptick. Her much buzzed-about altercation with Cardi B at the Plaza Hotel Friday night was the top trending topic at NYFW on social media over the weekend, with their fight garnering more than 400,000 engagements.
All in all, there have been over 300,000 posts for NYFW in the past week. And with several more days to go, only time will tell if Minaj comes out of the week on top.
