Sotheby’s Paris Preps Fourth Auction of Books From Pierre Bergé’s Personal Library

BERGE’S BOOKENDS: If reading is the key to enlightenment, Pierre Bergé sure had a lot of books to spark his intelligence.
Sotheby’s Paris will hold the fourth auction for a selection of books from Bergé’s personal collection on Dec. 14. Several choice lots are on view at Sotheby’s New York office through Saturday, and they illustrated the myriad interests of the late French business titan: botany, gardens, philosophy, activism and more. The upcoming auction is expected to drum up between 5 million euros and 6 million euros, according to a Sotheby’s spokeswoman.
Literature, the 19th century and music were among the areas of interest covered in prior sales, with the first auction having been held nearly three years ago.
The December sale includes such highlights as Bartholomeus Anglicus’ “Le Propriétaire des choses,” circa 1486. This complete copy of a major medieval encyclopedia is illustrated with 19 large woodcuts, all hand-colored at that time. Bidders will also find Gustave Flaubert’s “Salammbô” from 1863, a first edition that was inscribed by Flaubert to the composer Hector Berlioz.
Another reading relic is Leonhart Fuchs’ “De historia stirpium commentarii insignes” from 1542 that is considered to be the founding treatise of modern botany. The auction house will also

Talbots Partners With the ‘Christmas Spectacular’ Starring the Radio City Rockettes

HOLIDAY CHEER: In one of the more unexpected branding coups, Talbots has partnered with the “Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes,” and will be the official women’s fashion and footwear partner.
In addition to being a lead sponsor with Chase, the Massachusetts-based chain of boutiques will have a replica storefront in the department store scene during this year’s “Christmas Spectacular” production at Radio City Music Hall. That scenario centers on two brothers who are on the hunt for the ideal Christmas gift for their sister and they wind up on a wintry adventure to discover the magic behind Santa Claus.
The Talbots-Rockettes connection will not only be on the historic hardwood stage at Rockefeller Center. The high-kicking dancers will be featured in Talbots’ holiday campaign, which will encompass the holiday catalogue and the retailer’s site. For the crucial fourth-quarter selling season, Talbots has recruited the Rockettes to field their share of meet-and-greets and to make cameos at select customer events at the Talbots Madison Avenue flagship.
Set to bow Nov. 9, this year’s production will feature a more technologically advanced “Christmas Lights” finale, combining innovation — futuristic digital projections with more traditional aspects that will extend the show beyond the stage.

Dsquared2 Revamps the Brand’s First Fragrance and Introduces a Women’s Version

TIM-BER!: “We’re not killing trees anymore,” said Dean Caten of Dsquared2 at the exclusive launch of the brand’s revamped Wood fragrance, which no longer has wooden packaging.
The men’s and women’s fragrances — brown for the boys and pink for the girls — now takes the shape of a hefty beer bottle.
The 30-ml. bottle sells for 44 pounds and the 100-ml. bottle sells for 75 pounds. The fragrance launches at Harvey Nichols on Monday and the Caten brothers expressed the importance of launching exclusively with the department store.
“It’s important to give an exclusive to somebody because it makes it more important as opposed to coming out everywhere. It’s more intimate this way,” said Dean.
In May, Dsquared2 inked a licensing agreement with Euroitalia for the production and distribution of the brand’s fragrances, and Wood is the first perfume to be relaunched under this new partnership.
The men’s fragrance has been reworked while the women’s is a completely new scent created by perfumer Marie Salamagne. Both incorporate similar base notes such as white wood and ambrox.
“We’ve scrapped all of our other perfumes and since Wood was our first fragrance and our bestseller, we’re relaunching with this,” said Dan.
While the fragrance has been divided into men’s and
