Co designers Stephanie Danan and Justin Kern tapped Yelena Yemchuk, the Ukrainian director, photographer and painter, to photograph their fall look book, which features Yemchuk’s own artwork as a backdrop. Those paintings — which depict sensual, sometimes awkward, often nude renderings of women’s bodies — also served as a source of inspiration for the fall collection. “Yelena’s paintings embrace the imperfections of a woman’s body,” said Danan. “I wanted to do a collection that was about our relationship to our bodies, embracing our bodies.”
Channeling a Forties vibe, which Danan referred to as “the era of the hourglass,” the duo offered silhouettes with accentuated shoulders, cinched waists and midi lengths. They introduced artful textures into the mix, including hand-painted velvet, polka-dotted sheer chiffon and geometric floral-patterned lace, as well as prints, including a graphic black-and-white plaid, which added drama to a romantic bell-sleeve shirtdress. All of it captured romance and unapologetic femininity.
