If you heard a low rumble over the skies of Orange County on Wednesday afternoon, that was the sound of four World War II-era bomber and fighter aircraft headed for a special appearance at John Wayne Airport and Lyon Air Museum.

The visit is part of the national Wings of Freedom Tour sponsored by the Collings Foundation, a nonprofit educational organization.

Four of these aircraft — a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress “Nine O Nine” WWII Heavy Bomber, Consolidated B-24 Liberator “Witchcraft” WWII Heavy Bomber, North American B-25 Mitchell, and P-51 Mustang fighter — landed at the Lyon Air Museum Wednesday, May 10, and will remain there until Sunday, May 14, for public display and education.

Tickets to view the aircraft are $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12. Visitors may also take a 30-minute flight aboard the planes for $450 per person on the B-17 or the B-24, or fly the P-51 aircraft for $2,200 for a half-hour or $3,200 for a full hour.

The display is at 19300 Ike Jones Road in Santa Ana.

Hours for ground tours and display are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, May 11, through Sunday, May 14. Reservations are required. For more information, call 800-568-8924.

Ducks face new challenges vs. Predators in conference finals

ANAHEIM — The beards will keep growing and the Ducks will keep playing. They eliminated the Edmonton Oilers in Game 7 of their second-round playoff series with a 2-1 victory Wednesday, ending their Game 7 curse with a smart, patient game that showed off all their experience, depth and skill.

No rest for the weary, though.

Games 1 and 2 of the best-of-7 Western Conference finals are Friday and Sunday at Honda Center.

So, say goodbye to the Oilers and hello to the Nashville Predators.

Nashville is 8-2 in the playoffs after eliminating the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues.

The Ducks are 8-3 after defeating the Calgary Flames and the Oilers.

“They defend really well,” Ducks left wing Andrew Cogliano said of the Predators. “I think they’re more defense-first. They’re physical. They’re very physical. They’ve got (goaltender Pekka) Rinne. I think their ‘D’ are the best in the league, personally.

“Nashville is as good as you’re going to find in the league.”

The Ducks were 2-1 against the Predators during the regular season, but two of the games were in the opening weeks, so it’s difficult to gauge them. The Ducks beat the Predators, 6-1, on Oct. 26 and 4-3 in a shootout on March 7 at Honda Center. They also lost, 5-0, on Nov. 12 at Nashville.

The Predators have beaten the Ducks twice in the playoffs, including in the first round last season. Nashville’s victory in Game 7 over the Ducks extended their humiliating streak of winner-take-all-defeats at Honda Center to four in as many seasons.

The Ducks reversed the curse Wednesday.

Can their momentum carry over to the next round?

“Last time we played them we gave them the first two here, and we don’t want to do that again,” Cogliano said of the Ducks’ playoff loss last season to the Predators. “We’ve earned home ice. It’s something we’re proud of. Tonight, the building was awesome.

“Places like Calgary and Edmonton, all the other markets get a lot of credit for their fans, but tonight ours was as loud and maybe even better. It was as loud as you can get. We feed off that. We need the energy from the fans. I try to think of it as, we’re in it as a team, the organization and the fans.

“We’re going to need everyone.”

The Ducks’ victory over the Oilers in Game 7 featured contributions from near and far. Cogliano scored the tying goal in the second period and left wing Nick Ritchie supplied the go-ahead goal 3 minutes, 21 seconds into the third.

The Ducks’ second-round win is history, though.

“I think we have to start over,” defenseman Hampus Lindholm said. “We’ve done some good things, but now we’re playing a different team. We have to play even better. Next game is going to be the toughest of the season. We have to have that approach to the game.

“We have to play like we did tonight, and even better.”

The Predators don’t have one player with the overall brilliance of Connor McDavid, the Oilers’ 20-year-old wunderkind. But they have speed and skill that will make them every bit as difficult for the Ducks to slow down as the Oilers, according to Lindholm.

“They have a of speed up front with (Viktor) Arvidsson and (Filip) Forsberg and then they have a very active ‘D,’” Lindholm said. “They like to play a lot from their ‘D.’ They’re pretty similar that way (to the Oilers). Compared to Edmonton, they have even better defensemen.

“It’s something we should be aware of.”

Much of the Ducks’ defending of the Predators figures to fall on the broad shoulders of centers Ryan Getzlaf and Ryan Kesler. They shadowed McDavid and fellow Oilers center Leon Draisaitl without mercy in Game 7, blanking both of Edmonton’s top scorers.

“It’s, obviously, a team that’s playing outstanding in the playoffs,” Getzlaf said of the Predators after asking when the conference finals would begin. “We’re going to have to be prepared, and we’ll start that process tonight and tomorrow morning.”

ANAHEIM — The Ducks’ annual Game 7 colonoscopy began with the most bitter taste of all.

Shea Theodore recovered a puck behind John Gibson’s net, after Edmonton’s Patrick Maroon checked it loose from Ryan Kesler. He skated out and in front of Gibson.

Suddenly the puck was acting if it knew the time and date and context of this whole night. It skittered away from the Ducks’ rookie defenseman and, with the Oilers’ Drake Cagguila helping, ducked through Gibson’s pads and into the net.

Three minutes and 31 seconds had elapsed. The many Edmonton fans at Honda Center continued to sound their party rock anthem. The Ducks fans, especially those who sat through the four previous Game 7 losses, were mildly nauseous, to coin a phrase.

With nearly 56 and a half minutes left, what indignities would remain?

“A crappy goal, to be honest,” Andrew Cogliano said. “But we didn’t panic.”

A couple of hours and several quarts of sweat later, Theodore had a chance to stand in front of Gibson, and this time he ended an Edmonton possession.

A while after that, Josh Manson had the puck in the very same position, with the clock disappearing and deliverance on his stick.

The Ducks had earned a series-clinching 2-1 win that leaves Edmonton and a whole wheelbarrow of emotional debris behind.

They play Nashville in the Western Conference finals, with Game 1 here Friday. We’ll see if they skate even harder, without the weight.

“All those other games, we let it get away from us after something bad happened,” Cogliano said. “Tonight we stuck to the game plan. We kept clamping down defensively. We figured if we kept doing that, something would open up for us. We kept pushing.

“The gaps were good, we didn’t give them much in the neutral zone, we didn’t even give them many chances in the third period. It’s great to win, but it’s also great to win a tight game like that.”

The second and third periods comprised the best 40 minutes the Ducks have played in the postseason, maybe in a couple of postseasons. Ryan Kesler’s bloodhounding appeared to weigh heavily on Connor McDavid, who had one shot on goal. Leon Draisaitl had only two, significant because he had checkmated the Ducks in the Oilers’ wins.

Randy Carlyle moved Nick Ritchie onto Ryan Getzlaf’s line to try to match muscle. “It wasn’t a genius move,” Carlyle said, because Ritchie had played there much of the season. But Ritchie is big and strong and, most important, not guilty by association.

When the Ducks were losing those Game 7s, Ritchie was playing for the Peterborough Petes, the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and the San Diego Gulls. On Sami Vatanen’s pass, he fired the game-winner past Cam Talbot 3:21 into the third period, a goal-scorer’s goal into the far corner.

The other storyline that ruffled the Ducks, or at least their coach, was that the boy-band Oilers were going to use Anaheim as a stairstep on the way to heaven. Carlyle pointed out that the Ducks won four of the last five games in the series and managed to win after they lost their first two games at home.

“We felt a little disrespected,” Carlyle said. “I don’t think many teams in the league have the record we’ve had since Christmas. (29-11-7). We know Edmonton has some young players, but our organization has produced some good young players, too.”

“This is really something we’ve been building,” said Getzlaf, who turned 32 and is now 3-2 in NHL playoff games on his birthday. “In the beginning of the year we had the World Cup, we had a new coach, we had some guys who weren’t here (thanks to contract holdouts). We thought we might get off to a slow start. But the resiliency and the belief is something that reminds me a lot of that season (2007, when the Ducks won the Stanley Cup). We scored three goals in the last three minutes (in Game 5). That doesn’t happen by accident.”

Manson, who along with Hampus Lindholm made noticeable plays all night on the backline, talked of “keeping our foot on the gas throughout. We kept smothering them defensively, because we knew their rush was coming. That’s the way we need to play hockey to be successful.”

It also helped that the officials adopted benign neglect. The Ducks and OIlers had one power play apiece. Advantage, Ducks, primarily because they came into the game 2 for 22 with the man-advantage but also because it allowed Carlyle to keep his lines moving in sequence. Although the fourth line of Chris Wagner, Jared Boll and Nate Thompson played limited minutes, it made a difference, especially with Wagner firing a puck at Talbot’s mask and then nearly scoring on the rebound. Carlyle pointed to a second-period shift in which Wagner, Boll and Thompson were particularly rambunctious.

“I thought that was the turning point of the game,” he said. “Every other line, throughout that period, followed that up.”

Oilers coach Todd McLellan discussed the “bruises and bumps and ice bags” he saw in the postgame locker room on some “scrawny, bony-looking hockey players.”

McDavid, his 20-year-old captain, has a bountiful future, but in this series he scored five points in seven games and was only plus-1. He did average more than 25 minutes, but won only 35.2 percent of his faceoffs.

“He’s a great player, obviously,” Getzlaf said. “We tried our best to stop him. At times we might have paid too much attention to him and not enough to Draisaitl (13 points). But they’re an excellent team, well put-together.”

Three time zones away, the Washington Capitals sustained another Game 7 loss and are in for long months of media lashing — or, worse, emotional abandonment from their fans. Irrational cries to trade Alex Ovechkin have already resounded.

The Ducks claimed all along that the Game 7 talk was bouncing off their leathery skin. Their ecstatic reaction indicated how much they’d bled on the inside.

“We’ve been kicked to the curb a few times,” Cogliano said. “We’ve taken a lot of heat in this room, and rightfully so. It’s a bad feeling to end your years like that. We were ready to follow the leaders who’ve experienced it, because we were sick of it. We were ready to prove the doubters wrong.”

Easier when none of the doubters are in the room.

ZIPS Dry Cleaners, the Planet Fitness of dry cleaning, recently opened the first of 110 locations planned for Southern California.

The Maryland-based concept aims to do for dry cleaning what Planet Fitness did to the gym industry by offering an inexpensive, flat price for its services. Whether it’s a necktie, a wedding dress or a collared shirt, the no-frills dry cleaning chain charges $2.29 per garment. ZIPS maintains its price is three times less expensive than the industry average.

The company also offers same-day service for garments dropped in by 9 a.m. The first local store opened May 5 at 3010 Bristol Street in Costa Mesa. It’s the first of roughly 30 stores planned for Orange County by Los Angeles-based ZDry, a franchisee that owns the rights to build the brand in Southern California.

ZDry also owns and operates 10 Planet Fitness gyms in the Los Angeles area, with several more under development.

Shawn Bishop, a managing partner at ZDry, said 20 years ago before Planet Fitness changed the gym landscape, consumers didn’t blink an eye when they were charged $50 or more for their monthly gym membership.

“Today, ZIPS is doing the same in their industry,” Bishop said. “Everyone needs dry cleaning in some capacity. The real question customers should ask themselves is, ‘Would I rather pay $50-$60 for 10 pieces to be dry cleaned, or $23 for the same 10 pieces and have it done in one day?’”

At ZIPS, the company said its garments are cleaned in a closed-cleaning system that reduces waste, uses biodegradable plastic bags and recycles hangers.

The first ZIPS stores were founded in the Baltimore-Washington D.C. area in 1996. Today the chain operates more than 50 stores in six states.

Academy of Art University Fashion Show Highlights Design, Material Innovation

Academy of Art University celebrated the graduating class of the School of Fashion with its annual runway show last Saturday presenting creations from 19 graduating students who collaborated with jewelry, textile and knitwear students to create more than 100 looks.
Notable among the student looks were Estene Marquez’s six elegant pieces, including eveningwear of laser-cut silk organza in black and nude. One standout was a long-sleeved hoodie in laser-cut wool faille worn over floor-dusting wide-leg organza pants with suspenders.
Jeanne Marie Sanguinetti designed Seventies-inspired ivory minidresses embellished with embroidered patches of Pac-Man video game characters. Sanguinetti’s long black fused canvas jumpsuit was adorned with Pac-Man appliqués and a series of flickering yellow resin LED lights that raced around the body and legs. Jiran Xia’s bold-shouldered peach cashmere and wool full-length coat had flower-motif panels floating down the front, worn over an abstract print dress in yellow and orange cotton.
“Students make every possible use of classic tailoring and sewing techniques and have embraced digital printing, 3-D printing and laser cutting, and [they] use Photoshop and computerized pattern-making and drafting, and wearable tech, “ said Simon Ungless, executive director of the School of Fashion. “At the same time, they have a great appreciation of craftsmanship and

Gucci’s Chime for Change Announces Chimehack 4 Event at Facebook

Gucci’s Chime for Change initiative, together with Global Citizen, Facebook and Kleiner Perkins, will host Chimehack 4, its fourth “hackathon” to create tech-driven solutions for gender equality, on June 10 and 11 at Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif.
“Chimehack has always addressed some of the toughest challenges facing girls and women around the world, from reducing violence against women to increasing access to medical care.
