Roundup: Edison stays hot, tops Long Beach Wilson

EDISON 4, WILSON 2 >> The Moore League champion Bruins (17-11) only had two hits against Edison starter Riley Haddon in a Division 2 first-round loss at home.

The Chargers (19-12), who have won 11 of their last 15 games, jumped out to an early lead, and after Wilson tied the score in the second inning, Edison junior Spencer Serven hit a two-run home run in the third inning to cap the scoring.

“It’s baseball and it’s a funny game,” Wilson coach Andy Hall said. “You can’t factor in emotions and nerves like you think you can. We came out flat to start and (Edison) took advantage because they’re a good hitting team.”

The Chargers started the game with four consecutive hits off Wilson ace Zach Pettway and finished with nine for the game. Edison scored on an RBI single from sophomore Ted Burton and Serven’s sacrifice fly in the first inning.

Pettway hit a solo home run in the second inning before third baseman Alex Seguine singled and eventual scored on a ground out to tie the game, 2-2. Wilson never got another hit. In the following frame, Edison catcher Connor Aoki hit a one-out single before Serven’s two-out go-ahead home run to left field. Pettway only allowed two hits in the next three innings while striking out five. Relief pitcher Cole Fleming pitched a scoreless seventh.

Haddon needed less than 80 pitches to go the distance while striking out seven without issuing a walk. The junior retired 17 consecutive batters to finish the game, including striking out the side in the seventh inning.

ST. ANTHONY 11, ST. MARGARET’S 7 >> The Saints (21-2) scored early and held off St. Margaret’s (13-11) in the first round of Division 6 at Clark Field.

St. Anthony will host Big Bear in the second round on Tuesday.

“We were pretty good offensively,” St. Anthony coach Kris Jondle said. “(St. Margaret’s) was motivated and it was important for us to jump on them early.”

The Saints had 10 hits, including four when they batted around in the first inning. Senior Dominik Goldschmidt had a huge day at the plate, going 2 for 3 with two home runs and four RBIs.

“My coaches were telling me to focus on hitting line drives and I got some good pitches to hit,” Goldschmidt said. “I got under a couple balls and with the short porch they were able to get over.”

St. Anthony took a 5-0 lead after eight players reached base in the first inning, including junior Dominick Tucker, who got on twice. Tucker went 2 for 3 with two walks, three runs and two RBI.

“I got into some good counts and just took a hack to see where it went,” Tucker said. “I wanted to get on base for my teammates so they can execute.”

After Goldschmidt hit his second home run of the day to give the Saints a four-run cushion in the sixth, St. Margaret’s brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh with two outs. Freshman JB Quamma got two big strikeouts in the final inning. He pitched four innings after starting pitcher Wyatt Duran was taken out after three.

“He’s nails,” Jondle said about Quamma. “He throws strikes and he competes. He’s just a battler.”

Sophomore Andrew Donini scored runs in the first and second inning, respectively, for the Saints. He also had an RBI in the third. Davis and junior Matt Sussoeff each had an RBI and a run.

Homeselling heros make deals delightful

In any residential real estate transaction, it is the home buyers and sellers who call the shots.

Sure, agents, lenders, home inspectors, termite inspectors, contractors, loan processors, loan underwriters, and plenty of other people have a hand in the deal. But the buyers and sellers are in charge. They make the final decisions on price, terms, and the fabulously fun process of figuring out what to do with the information in the home inspection report.

I’d like to tip my hat to a few of my recent heroes – folks who made the home buying and selling process delightful.

The Prince Charming of Home Sellers: This guy was amazing. Proactive, courteous, thorough, detail-oriented and generous.

He had the house professionally cleaned before every open house. He had the carpets cleaned before the final walk through. He had the gardener come after the fumigation tent was removed to trim back the damaged shrubbery around the outside of the house. He had the built-in barbecue in the backyard professionally cleaned. And his wife left a gift basket for the buyers on the kitchen counter. And all of these were done on top of taking care of all the items on the buyer’s request for repairs.  Charming.

The Fairy Godfather of Home Flippers:  Buying from a high-volume flipping company does have its benefits. After discovering that the air conditioner wasn’t working, the fireplace had a huge crack, and the shower tile had not been grouted and sealed, the listing agent essentially submitted a punch list to his “people” at the flipping company and everything was taken care of at the seller’s expense within four days of submitting the request for repairs.

Almost as good as having a magic wand.

The Mary Poppins of Homeowner’s Association representatives: When the home inspector found the wooden balcony had dry rot, the metal weep screed along the bottom of the stucco was damaged, the water heater stand was full of mold, the sliding glass door frame was deteriorated, and the post tension cables for the foundation were rusted, a return email confirmed that the HOA would be taking care of all of these items.

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

The Mother Teresa of home buyers: Knowing they got a smoking deal, the buyers elected not to ask for anything to be repaired, other than the termite damage to the patio cover.  What a blessing!

Of course, there’s the flip side – the curs and villains who make the transaction a nightmare.  But that will have to wait until another time.

Power pole fire knocks out electricity to some Costa Mesa residents

COSTA MESA — A transformer caught fire Friday night, knocking out power to several residents in Costa Mesa, authorities said.

Reports of a pole in the backyard of a residence sparking and exploding were made about 9:30 p.m. on May 19 in the 2100 block of Fairview Road and Wilson Street, according to Costa Mesa Fire Department Capt. Chris Coates.

The outage is affecting people within Fairview Road and Placentia Avenue and Joann and Wilson streets, according to Coates. A second outage was also reported in the area between Harbor Boulevard and Mesa Verde Drive East and Adams Avenue, he said.

Southern California Edison is on scene working to restore power.

No time estimate was given as to when the transformer would be fixed.

UCLA’s Rachel Garcia no-hits Lehigh in run-rule victory to open NCAAs

LOS ANGELES — Kelly Inouye-Perez recognized early on that Rachel Garcia was in for a special night.

With the redshirt freshman pitcher mowing down Lehigh batters almost at will, the UCLA softball coach surrendered her pitch-calling duties and let Garcia free in the circle.

In her postseason debut, Garcia repaid her coach and her team with her first career no-hitter, blanking Lehigh, 8-0, in five innings in the first round of the four-team, double-elimination NCAA regional at Easton Stadium.

The fifth-seeded Bruins (43-13) will play San Jose State, which defeated Cal State Fullerton, 3-0, on Saturday at 2 p.m. The winner advances to Sunday’s regional finals.

Of Garcia’s 80 total pitches, 54 were strikes as she faced only one batter more than the five-inning minimum. Working with catcher Paige Halstead, the Garcia struck out eight, including five of the first seven batters she faced. The only blemish on the perfect game was a hit-by-pitch in the second inning.

“She was dominating today,” Inouye-Perez said.

The former Gatorade National Player of the Year said she didn’t know she was working on a no-hitter until assistant coach Kirk Walker broke the news after the game. Playing in her first posteason game, Garcia shrugged at any suggestion that it might feel different than any of her 37 regular-season appearances.

“It just felt like a normal game,” Garcia said.

Garcia’s dominance afforded the Bruins time to crack Lehigh’s Christine Campbell, the Patriot League Pitcher of the Year. Only one UCLA batter got a hit the first time through the lineup, but the Bruins figured out Campbell’s tricky changeup, led by Spaulding’s two-out solo home run in the third inning. The senior had a team-high three RBI.

“The best part about this team is there’s no panic,” Inouye-Perez said. “There are adjustments being made and (Spaulding) sets a great tone in being able to make adjustments in her at-bats and I think it bleeds into the team.”

UCLA scored four runs in the third inning, added two more in the fourth, then closed the game with two in the fifth. Brianna Tautalafua and Madeline Jelenicki each had a home run and two RBI.

It’s the second straight year that UCLA opened postseason play with a no-hitter at home after Johanna Grauer’s last season.

Garcia only called her first no-hitter “cool.”

Inouye-Perez was more outspoken: “Rachel Garcia throwing her first career no-hitter in Game 1 of postseason is definitely an epic memory that we’ll remember forever.”

For Tokyo Vintage Store Nude Trump, It’s Business as Usual

TOKYO — Longtime Shibuya vintage store Nude Trump says its business remains unaffected by the erratic behavior of the American president with whom it shares a name.
The store, located on the third floor of an Eighties-style building, offers a hodgepodge of vintage blouses, go-go dresses, ballet costumes, heavy gold chains, hats and more. It was opened 28 years ago by Tokyo vintage dealing legend Hayao Matsumura, whom some refer to as the “grandfather” of Tokyo mishmash fashion.
The shop’s Trump name was not inspired by the entrepreneur-turned-politician, but rather by playing cards that feature the image of nude pin-up models as decoration. In addition to clothes, accessories and costumes, Nude Trump sells nude trump cards as an expression of its name.
“There has been no change in sales,” a shop attendant relayed to WWD. They noted that about 90 percent of the store’s clientele are Japanese, and thus are not as alarmed by its Trump moniker.
The shop associate noted that perplexed tourists have begun visiting the shop, often proclaiming, “I hate Trump.”
The store is located within something of a DIY Trump complex. Just one flight upstairs is longtime Shibuya nightlife establishment Trump Room. Though the nightclub’s interior boasts many chandeliers and gold leaf

Melania Trump Dons Hervé Pierre for Washington Departure

FANNING THE FLAMES: Despite the fiery political climate inside and out of The Beltway this week, First Lady Melania Trump stayed cool when leaving Andrews Air Force Base Friday afternoon. Even though the May temperatures pushed 90 degrees under a blazing sun, FLOTUS donned a long-sleeve white Max Mara sweater and a Hervé Pierre high-waisted tangerine colored leather skirt with heavy ivory top stitches. Trump and the president left Washington en route to Saudi Arabia for their first official overseas visit. Upon arrival, their nine-day stay will be packed with official appearances, meetings and off-hours events with officials from Saudi Arabia and a range of other nations. The main event is the Arab Islamic American Summit which will attract leaders from dozens of Muslim countries. There will also be a regal meeting with Saudi King Salman, a country music performance and several business forums.
Her skirt Friday was designed by Pierre specifically for the occasion. He also created her widely acclaimed Inaugural Ball look. Jimmy Choo was her brand of choice for the stilettos she wore to cross the tarmac.
