“The name of the show is GP — giant pockets,” said Karl Lagerfeld pre-show, in his backstage meeting room at Fendi. “GP. Sounds good, no?” Lagerfeld then bemoaned the tight window between getting everyone back to work after the August holidays and staging a show on Sept. 20. “Too early!” he protested. “I went to Rome last week — ‘Where are the materials?’” Separately, Silvia Venturini Fendi described the collection as “very real clothes for a busy woman, very functional, practical.” High-function built with limited materials — not exactly the threshold to rapt anticipation.
As it turned out, Fendi’s savvy brain trust spoke too modestly. The show was, by Fendi standards, low-key, the lineup, true to billing, a collection for real life. As such, it featured those familiar real-world tropes with which high fashion has become obsessed — utility and sport. Yet this was no mere tony streetwear fest, as Lagerfeld’s approach was less embrace than acknowledgement — yes, life is getting casual — an acceptance he channeled into a nuanced collection, which — his pre-show grousing aside — showed not a hint of hurry-up. F.R.S. RTW Spring 2019

Memories of a trip into India and other Asian destinations inspired Francesca Ruffini for spring.
Rajasthan’s monkeys, depicted eating red berries, popped up on a chic silk shirtdress with the cuffs embellished with a geometric motif, while a Vietnamese tropical forest was reflected in the nocturnal print splashed on both a column dress enriched by a soft bow at the collar and on a lightweight organza robe coat.
While the maxi magnolia pattern of a blazer with satin lapels was flamboyant and eye-catching, the tiny Japanese flowers blossoming on a kimono-inspired frock had a more delicate, romantic appeal.
For the first time, the brand’s logo took center stage in a graphic pattern. Interlocked with images of pin-ups, it added a playful, cheeky attitude to the collection.

Pro-Fur Officials Challenge L.A. City Council’s Vote on Fur Sales Ban

In the wake of the Los Angeles City Council’s recent unanimous vote to put in motion a citywide ban of fur sales, the International Fur Federation and the Fur Information Council of America are striking back.
In a joint statement released Thursday, the groups emphasized that the Los Angeles city attorney still needs to draft the proposed law, before it is presented before the full City Council and debated. “It could still be amended and changed considerably, if members of council decide to do their homework.” the statement read.
As of Tuesday there was no specific timetable in place, according to a spokesman for Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer. “The specifics of the ban will need to be worked out per the instruction of our client, the City Council, before drafting a final version of any ordinance,” he said.
IFF’s Nancy Daigneault and Mark Oaten said, “This is public policy based on lies, flawed studies and false allegations as those proposing the ban have not proactively reached out to the fur industry to learn about the high animal welfare and environmental standards in place — nor have they learned about sustainability in a meaningful way.”

Wearables, 3-D Printed Fashion to Be Spotlighted in Fashion Show During World Maker Faire in New York

The 26-foot hydraulically activated “Hand of Man” and the Cosplay Contest will get their share of attention at this weekend’s World Maker Faire in Queens. Attendees may also be surprised to find the Future of Fashion Show, showcasing 3-D printed clothing, wearables and pioneering clothing.
As the East Coast’s largest showcase for tech and innovation, the event will have 600-plus projects on display at the New York Hall of Science Saturday and Sunday. The style-minded will find models hitting the stage in the main NYSCI auditorium Saturday at 5 p.m.
Presented by ThreeForm Fashion, a label that specializes in 3-D scanning and 3-D printing, the show will feature an assortment of on-the-rise companies. Katya Lee & the Space Force; Heisel; Tracy Belben; SciChic; Stephania Stefanakou; Zoa Chimerum; Emiko Shinozaki; Adrienne Sack; Erin Winick; WearWorks; and Spring & Wonder jewelry are among the labels that will be in the show. Several of the participants have been upstarts in different fields.
Designer Lee, for example, was the lead singer for the pop band Hi-Fi and later Fabrika. As a solo artist she is blending AI, fashion design and music. For this weekend’s runway, she has created “clothes and space suits for those who travel through

Nicki Minaj, Tennis Figures Take in Fendi Show

TENNIS, ANYONE? There was hardly any breathing room in the front row at Fendi — literally, as Chiara Ferragni nuzzled her husband, rapper Fedez, unfazed by the crowds of photographers angling at them. Ditto for Nicki Minaj, who was sitting on the other side of the runway unfazed by the paparazzi frenzy. Wearing pieces from the Fendi Mania capsule collection based on the Fendi/Fila logo created by Instagram artist @hey_reilly were Barbara Becker, Boris Becker’s first wife, and Emily McEnroe, daughter of John McEnroe and Tatum O’Neal. The two caught up backstage. ”I was especially surprised to see her again, because I saw her when she was a baby, but now that I see her like this I had to double-check,” Becker said. Asked about wearing the Fendi/Fila looks nodding to Fila’s storied tennis tradition, Becker said that because she had “known Fila for long, long time, it’s very easy to understand the collaboration. For me it makes a lot of sense.”

Sophia Amoruso to Place Portion of Designer Vintage Wardrobe on Sales Block

CLEANING HOUSE: Sophia Amoruso will sell more than 200 pieces from her personal collection of vintage and designer clothes, shoes and accessories on Friday via the app Basic Space.
The app works with influencers, entrepreneurs, designers and other creatives to sell pieces from their personal closets in addition to new product from brands, pitching its marketplace as a space for a more curated selection coming directly from tastemakers.
Friday’s sale is not Amoruso’s first time selling through the app (and she’s also made personal purchases for herself), but the assortment reflects the largest collection she’s made available through Basic Space. The more than 200 items include a Givenchy choker, white leather ankle boots from Gucci, Gucci backpack, Hermès silk scarf and Delfina Delettrez engagement ring. Of that last piece, Amoruso said in a prepared statement that the ring is “gorgeous but no longer has a place in my life.”
Amoruso, who founded online retailer Nasty Gal and more recently started the digital media firm Girlboss, originally launched Nasty Gal as an eBay shop selling vintage. The endeavor was born out of her own love for vintage.
“Vintage has history. It’s mysterious. It has character. It’s sustainable. It can be very cheap,” Amoruso went on

The Hoodwitch Brings Her Magic to Denim Floor at Bloomingdale’s

The Bloomingdale’s women’s denim floor has been infused with new energy.
Gearing up for the holiday season, Levi’s has partnered with Happy Noise to open customization tailor shops at Bloomingdale’s. The shop has launched on the denim floor at the 59th Street flagship, with a national rollout of the collaboration to follow. Customization options will include digital embroidery and heat transfers using zodiac and colorful crystal imagery created by Happy Noise, which launched as a metaphysical digital sticker company (think crystals, sage, etc.) before expanding into retail through Urban Outfitters and now the Levi’s collaboration.
To kick off the shop, the company enlisted the help of a modern-day witch slash digital influencer. The Hoodwitch, aka Bri Luna, will be offering public tarot card readings during the launch event today from 6 to 8 p.m. The Seattle-based Luna landed in New York earlier this month for Refinery 29’s 29 Rooms installation, where her crystal cave was a particularly popular stop, and will next head to Chicago for a sound bowl event with digital publication Altas Obscura. WWD caught up with The Hoodwitch ahead of the launch event.
