Jussara Lee Taking Her Message of Sustainability to a Multisensory Performance in New York

SECONDHAND NEWS: Committed to sustainability as an individual, designer and business owner, Jussara Lee used that ideology as a rookie costume designer for “Inside the Wild Heart.”
Based on the writings of one of Brazil’s most famous writers, Clarice Lispector, the immersive theatrical experience was conceived by Andressa Furletti and Debora Balardini and directed by Linda Wise. The show bows Thursday in New York. Lee was initially approached by the Brazilian theater company Group.BR about helping to fund the production. She offered to pitch in with the cast’s attire instead.
Lee described Lispector’s work as “amazing,” but the project’s upcycling is what really sold her. Working with a low budget meant “that it was all about secondhand and vintage shopping. I was very interested in that and told them, ‘We’ll make adjustments. We’ll make things fit. That’s what we do best,’” said Lee, adding that she liked the idea of reusing “things that had already been extracted and polluted. There is so much clean-up to do and so much stuff in this world.””
In addition, the project forced her to switch up her usual routine and do some thrifting at Beacon’s Closet in Brooklyn and “all the other underlings.” It was also an

Marc Jacobs, Marina Kellen French to Receive Awards at Indigo Ball

A NIGHT AT THE ARMORY: In review of Marc Jacobs’ spring 2019 collection, WWD referred to the show as “unrelenting, magical fashion that ranged from want-it-right-now to full-on fantasy.” The designer who ushered in grunge, then glamour of the purest order (then grunge again), is known to invoke awe with whatever skin he puts on. It should be no surprise, then, that Jacobs is to be bestowed with an honor at this year’s Indigo Ball on Oct. 16 for his artistry and showmanship.
Jacobs, along with philanthropist Marina Kellen French, will be awarded at the Tuesday night event inside New York’s Park Avenue Armory. The gala is to feature cocktails, a dinner and a presentation of artist Robert Wilson’s “Voom” portrait that features Winona Ryder. The actress is depicted, clad in a floral headdress, standing behind a hillside decorated with a purse and toothbrush. Plus, there will be performances by the International Contemporary Ensemble, jazz singer Cécile McLorin Salvant, pianist Aaron Diehl and a full orchestra led by conductor Darcy James Argue.
Guests slated to attend range from designer James de Givenchy to the deputy mayor of New York, Alicia Glen. The gala will be co-chaired by Wendy Belzberg and Strauss

Bicester Village Swings the Spotlight on London Fashion Talent

BICESTER BONANZA: With fashion weeks out of the way, London designers are getting down to business and taking part in a pop-up shop at Bicester Village, part of a new, two-year retail venture between the British Fashion Council and the Bicester Village Shopping Collection.
The BFC Designer Pop-up at Bicester Village in Oxfordshire, England, will open on Nov. 1 and trade for 11 days, stocking pieces by designers and labels including Christopher Kane, Emilia Wickstead, Marques’Almeida, Mother of Pearl, Nicholas Kirkwood, Palmer Harding, Peter Pilotto, Roksanda and Teatum Jones.
Caroline Rush, chief executive officer of the BFC, said the new program, dubbed Business of Retail, will allow designers to benefit from Bicester’s strong commercial expertise, and gain essential business skills.
The partnership between the BFC and Bicester involves business mentorship as well as commercial opportunity. It wants to give designers “a new retail landscape, business development expertise and global exposure, and assist them in taking the crucial steps to establishing themselves on the global stage.”
Desirée Bollier, chief merchant and chair of The Bicester Village Shopping Collection, called the pool of design talent in the U.K. extraordinary, and said: “It is our ambition to champion this creativity and arm designers with the skills and tools needed to

Vuori to Expand Into Women’s Wear

Vuori, a men’s activewear brand, is taking the plunge into women’s.
The label, which was founded by Joe Kudla and has a coastal California aesthetic, had dabbled in women’s for the past several seasons, offering a few pieces, and the positive response prompted the addition of a full assortment for spring. The lineup will be focused on fitness and travel and will include performance shorts, jumpsuits and woven joggers that are intended to perform but still look chic.

A look from the inaugural Vuori women’s collection.

“Our community and active coastal California lifestyle inspire what we do everyday, from running, surfing, outdoor training and yoga,” Kudla said. “We always knew women’s would be an integral part of the Vuori brand. A combination of the right time in our business as well as consumer demand has led us to a place where we are thrilled to build a values-based, multigender brand. We feel we have been able to accomplish this new perspective on performance apparel for women even within a saturated, trend driven market.“
The spring collection will be sold at Nordstrom, REI, Core Power and on the Vuori web site. Prices will range from $84 for joggers and leggings; $58 for shorts, and $44 for

Russian Government Joins Search for Next Gosha

MOSCOW — The search is on for the next Gosha Rubchinskiy — and the Russian government is getting behind the effort.
Hoping to capitalize on heightened interest in homegrown fashions — and give designers a leg up against powerful foreign players — the Russian Fashion Council and Moscow Council, a branch of the department of culture, have established Futurum Moscow, a platform for new talents.
Its first volley was a fashion show on Oct. 12 in a packed warehouse at the Museum of Moscow, staged on the eve of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia, which winds up on Wednesday. Twenty labels participated, including Alkhanashvili, Daniil Kostyshin and Six One Six. Many designers paraded collections with a streetwise edge, while artists exhibited their works at stands dotted around the event.
While the investments behind it are small — less than $400,000 over the last two years from the Russian Fashion Council — Futurum is seen as an important signal that even the state finally spies potential in fashion.
