Mary Quant Show Draws Record Crowds to V&A in London

SOMETHING ABOUT MARY: There is no slaking the public’s thirst for fashion, or fashion history — at least in London.
The V&A said its exhibition “Mary Quant” has welcomed 400,000 visitors, making it the museum’s third most popular fashion event, after the two blockbusters, “Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams” and “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty.”
The V&A plans to reveal the news today, Feb. 11, Mary Quant’s 90th birthday.
The museum said the show, which underlines Quant’s reign over Swinging London, her enormous influence on high street retail and everyday women’s fashion has even surpassed “Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion,” which pulled in 272,564 visitors.
The show will close on Feb. 16 before moving to Dundee, Scotland, where it will open on April 4 as part of the V&A Dundee’s Fashion 2020 season.
“Mary Quant,” which opened last April, brings together more than 120 pieces of clothing as well as accessories, cosmetics, sketches and photographs — the majority of which have never been on display before.
The museum received unprecedented access to the designer’s archive and drew on its own extensive fashion holdings, which include the largest public collection of Quant garments in the world.
The show explores Quant’s work between 1955 and 1975, with curators arguing it was the right

Lela Rose Bakes Up a Storm for New York Fashion Week Presentation

LELA’S ALL-NIGHT BAKERY: In the specter of entertaining, Lela Rose is an overachiever — so why would preparations for her presentation Monday afternoon have been any different?
Apparently, designing a 26-piece collection and opening a pop-up flower store were not enough for the New York designer. She also volunteered her baking skills to ensure that guests got a sampling of her homemade cookies with hand-pressed flowers. Her schedule last week basically amounted to a second job. After a full day’s work, she came home every night to bake for a solid three hours, usually from 9 p.m. until midnight. That drill intensified Saturday with five hours in the kitchen and then nearly a full day at the stove Sunday. “My feet were killing me. I went from fitting the clothes to making the cookies,” Rose said.
Guests stood shoulder-to-shoulder in the Greenwich Avenue shop trying to get a glimpse of the models wearing designs inspired by the Chelsea flower markets. Amidst the forsythia and racks of looks such as a silk satin one-shoulder dress with a turban sleeve and a botanical crepe open-neck dress with delicate crystal details, a table laden with plates of delicate-looking cookies anchored the room.
“I have been making

Jenna Bush Hager Takes in Veronica Beard show

“I love the Veronicas,” said NBC’s Jenna Bush Hager, who was attending the Veronica Beard show at 315 Spring Street Monday afternoon. Hager was referring to sisters-in-law Veronica Miele Beard and Veronica Swanson Beard, cofounders and designers of the 10-year-old contemporary fashion line, who hosted a runway show for the first time.
“I wear their clothes a lot. They’re awesome women. Sisters who work together I’m into,” said Hager.
Hager’s morning TV schedule precludes her from attending a lot of morning fashion shows, but she said she hopes to get to some evening shows this week.
As for what’s new with her, she said she and Hoda Kotb, cohosts of “Today With Hoda and Jenna,” recently moved into a new live-audience studio, and Oprah Winfrey was their guest on the show Friday.
Other front row guests at Veronica Beard’s show were Padma Lakshmi, Danielle Bernstein, Jamie Chung and Katie Sturino.
