Four Brands Selected for NYFW Mens: China Day

HONG KONG–Changes are coming fast to New York Fashion Week with the discussion of brands shifting to a June/December format while others depart for alternative cities. Attendees can add at least one more change to the list: four Chinese brands are to show in February during men’s under the banner of a China Day.
The chosen labels are: affordable Chinese fashion brand Peacebird; Li-Ning, a leading sportswear labels founded by the Olympic champion of the same name; the designer Chen Peng, known for his cocoon-like puffer jackets; and streetwear brand CLOT, founded by Hong Kong entrepreneur Kevin Poon and former actor-musician Edison Chen.
“China Day allows us to further expand the scope of NYFW: Men’s by showcasing the most exciting Chinese fashion talent to the American fashion community,” said CFDA president and chief executive officer Steven Kolb. The initiative is part of CFDA’s overall strategy to build international ties, which will in turn help us strengthen the impact of American fashion globally.”

Alaska Airlines and Luly Yang Unveil New Uniforms

FLYING HIGH: Alaska Airlines gave independent designer Luly Yang one tall order — creating uniforms for 19,000 Alaska, Virgin America and Horizon Air employees.
The Seattle-based company unveiled her creations during a fashion show in Alaska’s Sea-Tac hangar with employees walking a runway to showcase 90-plus garments and accessories. They were playing to a familiar crowd — thousands of other employees.
The company had reason to celebrate since the Federal Aviation Administration just approved a single operating certificate earlier this week, greenlighting the integration of the two airlines. Alaska closed its $2.6 billion purchase of Virgin America about a year ago.
Thousands of employees have been surveyed about their preferences, needs and suggestions, and focus groups were also held. More than anything, staffers asked for more pockets and seasonless silhouettes that flattered a variety of body types. To accommodate the ever-changing climates that airline crews travel to, the new uniforms are meant to be layered. Yang reportedly went undercover for six months in 2016, flying Alaska Airlines and quizzing employees about their uniforms under the premise that she was working on a research project. Their new looks will be officially rolled out starting in late 2019. But next week 130 pilots, flight attendants,

Marlene Dietrich’s Transgressive, Modern and Fashionable Style Highlighted in Book

HER OWN WOMAN: Without question, Marlene Dietrich’s popularity has stood the test of time. Now her transgressiveness, self-styled photo shoots, strong mindedness and unmistakable fashion sense are the subject of a Flammarion-published book, “Obsession Marlene Dietrich.”
In a Q&A with coauthor Jean-Henry Servat, Parisian gallery owner Pierre Passebon said Dietrich “invented, disseminated and popularized” the concept of wearing men’s clothes in a very feminine way.” She made a habit of wearing tuxedos and other men’s wear on screen and inadvertently became the muse for Yves Saint Laurent’s “Le Smoking” decades later. The daughter of a military man, she was partial to military uniforms and gold-braided caps, envisioning of her wardrobe in terms of uniforms rather than costumes. Passebon noted that she “never looked like she had had a fight with her outfits, unlike some other actresses.”
Notoriously private, the German-born actress and singer had a film career that spanned 60 years as well an extensive stage and cabaret one. Featuring images from Passebon’s personal collection, the compact book presents photos of the film star shot by Edward Steichen, Irving Penn, Cecil Beaton, George Hurrell and others. Dietrich is also the subject of two museum exhibitions — “Marlene Dietrich: Dressed for the Image” at
