MAKING THE CUT: Haider Ackermann, creative director of Berluti, is to preside over the fashion jury of the 33rd edition of the International Festival of Fashion and Photography, set to take place from April 26 to 30 in Hyères, France, WWD has learned exclusively.
Christelle Kocher, artistic director of Maison Lemarié, will head the jury for the festival’s accessories prize, sponsored by Swarovski and now in its second year. Meanwhile, Bettina Rheims will take the lead for photography.
Jean-Pierre Blanc, founder of the festival and director of the storied Villa Noailles, where the event is held, noted that Ackermann previously sat on the jury in 2008.
“He knows the festival very well and what is really nice is picturing how thrilled the young designers will be when they find out he’s president of the jury,” Blanc told WWD.
Organizers were due to reveal the 10 finalists for each of the three competitions at a cocktail on Wednesday at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, held to coincide with Paris Couture Week.
“I know that he was very impressed with the quality of the applications. Via his resolutely contemporary fashion, Haider Ackermann brings a strong and important international eye to the event, so it’s very important for

One of Irvine High’s original teachers and coaches, former athletic director Barry Schulenburg is being remembered for his love of coaching and competitive nature.
“Barry died recently in Idaho, where he lived with his wife, Jan Schulenburg, also a retired teacher from Irvine High School, said Irvine athletic director John Phillips.
Schulenburg died in November after a battle with cancer, friends say.
Schulenburg was on the Irvine teaching staff when the school opened in 1977. He taught social science and coached football and track and field, according to Phillips.
Schulenburg then became the athletic director at the school and also coached track at Irvine.
When Northwood opened in 1999, Schulenburg moved to Northwood where he joined the Timberwolves’ first football coach Rick Curtis.
“I met Barry back in the 80’s when he was coaching at Irvine and I was coaching at University,” said Curtis.
Curtis then moved to coach and teach at Irvine.
“He was a great athletic director,” Curtis said. “He would fight for his teams and fight to get coaches hired. We had some great times with Barry as the AD and I then I took over for Barry as the athletic director. He stepped down but we kept coaching together.
“He would coach the offense or the defensive line; wherever was needed. He was just a Warrior and he loved coaching and being around the kids.
“When I went to Northwood, I was able to bring Barry over there with me. Both Barry and Zaverio Brenner solidified the foundation for that program. He was just a great guy all the way around. It was sad to see him passing.”
Schulenburg, after coaching six or seven years at Northwood, returned to Irvine to finish his career.
The Schulenburg’s had moved to Idaho but Curtis and Schulenburg stayed in contact despite Schulenburg battling stage four cancer.
“He still followed USC; USC was his big deal,” Curtis said. “He liked the Trojans.”
Curtis added that Schulenburg was a Vietnam veteran.
Schulenburg’s nickname was the Bear.
“He was rough on the outside, but a Teddy Bear on the inside,” Curtis said. “He had a great personality and he was a fiery guy. He was loyal to all his friends.”
BIG DECISION FOR CREAN LUTHERAN
It will be interesting to see what direction Crean Lutheran goes for a new football coach after dismissing Matt Bowman as head coach last week.
Crean officials did not provide a reason for Bowman’s dismissal. The Saints face some challenges next year moving to the Empire League. Bowman seemed to be an excellent coach for the program and had two winning seasons.
