NEWPORT BEACH – Corona del Mar football coach Dan O’Shea said the only reason wide receiver John Humphreys got the ball so much last week — 13 catches for 214 yards – was because he was in the zone.
He must have been in the zone again Friday.
After breaking the school record for catches in a game last week, the junior caught five passes for 155 yards and four touchdowns, all in the first half, to lead Corona del Mar to a 59-6 victory over El Toro at Newport Harbor High.
The Sea Kings (2-1) went to the air, as usual, but quarterback Ethan Garbers couldn’t find Humphreys early on. Instead, he found Bradley Schlom for a 40-yard touchdown to give CdM the early lead.
Humphreys got his first catch with less than a minute left in the first quarter, an 18-yard touchdown grab.

“We were very fortunate,” CdM coach Dan O’Shea said. “El Toro has been an exceptional program. They were semifinalists last season. Coming in, we were just very fortunate to come in and take care of some matchups. We were fortunate to get some man-to-man matchups. We were able to deliver the ball very well to our wide receivers, but I think the key to our offense was our offensive line. They busted the butts in pass protection.
“They (El Toro) bring in five or six regularly, and they do such a good job on defense. They have scored three or four touchdowns as a defense this year. We were happy that we were able to get the ball out with that pressure.”
The same could not be said for the El Toro (2-1) offense, which also went to the air, but Chargers quarterback Austin Stover felt the pressure. He was sacked five times and intercepted twice, each one returned for Sea King scores by Jack Elliott and Kevin Ledezma.
Stover finished 11 of 24 passing for 144 yards and a 76-yard touchdown to Sam Whipple, who had three catches for 88 yards. He also led El Toro with six tackles.
After throwing two touchdowns in the first quarter, Garbers went on a tear through the air in the second quarter. He connected for four more touchdown passes, three of them to Humphreys.
The lopsided victory was something the Sea Kings could savor as they were on the other side of such a loss – 49-3 – in their season opener against JSerra.
Garbers, who was 11 of 22 passing for 269 yards and six touchdowns, all in the first half, said the Sea Kings learned a lot from that loss to JSerra.

“JSerra was really a wake-up call for us,” Garbers said. “We needed to wake up now that we are playing bigger and better teams. We have to come up to the challenge and execute, and we did that last week and tonight.”
El Toro will look to bounce back when its hosts Trabuco Hills on Friday, Sept. 7. Trabuco Hills defeated Saddleback Valley Christian 35-7 on Friday.
Schlom caught two passes for 69 yards with a TD, and Mark Redman caught three passes for 38 yards and a touchdown for CdM, which will be at Lakewood on Friday, Sept. 7.
“We’re going to prepare the same as we always do,” Humphreys said. “We approach every game the same. We have to work hard at practice. We have to get ready for what they do and watch a lot of film. We just have to go out there and play our game.”
