The Orange Coast College astronomy department will host a public lunar eclipse viewing in the Adams Avenue parking lot 3:30-6 a.m. Jan. 31. The eclipse will be the only lunar eclipse visible in the United States this year and will be accompanied by a “blue moon” and supermoon.
A “blue moon” is the occurrence of two full moons in a calendar month, which happens every two or three years. The first full moon this month was Jan. 1.
A simultaneous “blue moon” and lunar eclipse is extremely rare — the last one visible in the U.S. was in March 1866.
